Reko Diq Mining Company (RDMC) has reiterated its commitment to promoting local employment and business opportunities while addressing misinformation circulating on social media.
The company stated that misleading claims about Reko Diq’s workforce and contractors do not reflect reality.
According to RDMC, 78% of its current workforce is from Balochistan, with over 50% belonging to Chagai District.
This level of local hiring is unprecedented in any major mining project in Balochistan’s history.
RDMC is not only providing employment but also actively working to enhance the skills of local workers.
Through its collaboration with Hunarmand Foundation, the company has trained hundreds of men and women from Nokkundi in IT, pipe fitting, office assistance, electrical work, carpentry, and masonry.
Many graduates from these programs have been employed by RDMC and its contractors.
Additionally, RDMC launched the International Graduate Development Program (IGDP) in 2023, which provides young professionals from Balochistan and Chagai with opportunities to train at Barrick Gold’s international mining operations.
This initiative aims to prepare local talent for senior and managerial roles in the future.
Challenges Due to Limited Industrial Base
As a technologically advanced copper and gold mining project, Reko Diq requires a highly skilled workforce, which is currently scarce in Balochistan due to the limited presence of industrial sectors.
To address this gap, RDMC is continuously working to upskill local workers so that more Balochistan-based professionals can be employed in key positions.
The construction phase of the project will generate 7,500 jobs, while production operations will create 4,000 long-term employment opportunities.
Employee Security and Privacy Are Top Priorities
RDMC emphasized that it cannot comment on employees’ personal information due to privacy and security concerns.
The company warned that the spread of misinformation on social media could pose a threat to its workforce and operations, which is unacceptable.
It also stated that any attempts to compromise employee safety could result in legal action, as RDMC prioritizes the well-being of its workers.
Over PKR 6.1 Billion in Contracts Awarded to Local Businesses
Beyond employment, RDMC is actively supporting local businesses and suppliers.
In 2023 and 2024, the company awarded contracts worth PKR 2 billion (USD 7.2 million) to suppliers in Chagai and PKR 4.1 billion (USD 14.5 million) to businesses across Balochistan.
Due to Balochistan’s limited industrial base, the company sometimes struggles to procure the high-quality goods and services required for world-class mining operations.
To overcome this challenge, RDMC is investing in training and capacity-building programs for local businesses and contractors.
The company aims to foster economic growth in Chagai, Balochistan, and beyond by increasing local procurement opportunities.
Reko Diq: A Game-Changer for Balochistan’s Economy
RDMC believes that the Reko Diq project will bring transformational economic benefits to Balochistan and Pakistan.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to job creation, business development, and maintaining the highest international standards.
RDMC pledged to continue working closely with local communities and stakeholders to build a strong and prosperous future for all.
