Power Outage in Chagai, Traders Losing Millions, and Government Silence

Report: Farooq Rand

District Chagai is a region blessed by Allah with abundant natural mineral resources. From the gold and copper of Saindak to the gold of Reko Diq, these areas are internationally recognized.

From the London Road connecting to Europe to the nuclear test site, the land and mountains of Chagai have served the country in various ways.

However, unfortunately, the people of Chagai have never had access to basic facilities.

From water to healthcare, education to employment, the youth of Chagai are still wandering, with no one willing to solve their issues.

Those bringing a few liters of oil from the border are labeled as smugglers, while the deaf and mute rulers in the assembly only care about their own luxury.

The greed for power or money forces the oppressed people of Chagai to fall victim to some form of oppression every five years.

For five years, no one raises their voice about their businesses, and no one speaks up in the assembly for their rights.

Such representatives come to power, but the public never acknowledges them.

An unfortunate situation is that the main transformer in Dera Allah Yar, the capital of Chagai district, has been out of service for the past week.

The city’s main transformer, after 5-6 years, has finally broken down.

The responsibility for this malfunction lies not with the traders or consumers but with government officials, who, in exchange for unpaid bills, have illegally connected the city’s 200 kV transformer, rendering it useless.

For the past week, Dera Allah Yar’s market has been without electricity due to a fight between two government departments, resulting in daily losses of millions of rupees for traders. However, no one seems concerned.

The situation has escalated to the point where Basso reported that several transformers in the city are broken, left abandoned, and ignored.

Likewise, 8-10 transformers are left at the caseco garage, abandoned without any care.

Just like Israel disregards the rights of Palestinians in the arrogance of its power, here, leaders like Netanyahu enjoy their power in the desert, leaving the common citizens to suffer silently. Our citizens, instead of protesting against these issues, sit in silence, as if they are not capable of raising their voices for their rights.

The most disturbing news came when WAPDA handed over a bill of 30 crore rupees to PHE, plunging Dera Allah Yar into a state of darkness during the freezing cold of December.

In this battle, the people of Chagai face both electricity and water crises. A week has passed, and while social media reports say all transformers are restored, Basso and I are still sitting in the dark.

The opposition has issued statements, but those in power offer only reassurances, meeting the Iranian ambassador and working on resolving border issues while neglecting the concerns of their own people.
